Pakistan Test team head coach Jason Gillespie admitted that the side’s issues cannot be resolved immediately. His remarks come ahead of his first assignment as coach – the PAK vs BAN series which will begin on August 21. The former Australian pacer believes that the team’s identity will sort itself out and that it was a process to figure out how the team wanted to play going forward.
Gillespie not too optimistic about Pakistan at the moment
As per Cricbuzz, Gillespie said that Pakistan has all the bases covered in terms of bowling and that the team needs to be flexible and adaptable. The head coach also lamented about the lack of Tests played by Pakistan, noting that other big nations including India and England played at least 10-15 Tests in a year.
“The identity will sort itself out,” he says. “I don’t think that will be resolved right now. It will be a process to figure out exactly what surfaces we want to play on going forward,” Gillespie said on a PCB podcast.
The head coach admitted that the team had still not found out the right tyle of playing at home. Gillespie reckoned that the team needed to fix this quickly, adding that they should be able to create conditions to their advantage instead of thinking on how to cope with the opposition.
“We need more Test cricket. We play a lot of domestic cricket, so I don’t think we can blame that. We do play 10 first-class matches minimum, and with the introduction of departmental cricket, some players ended up playing 16-17 first-class matches in a year,” Gillespie added.
PAK vs BAN Tests
Shan Masood will lead the side against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series that will begin from August 21. Saud Shakeel will be his deputy. The tournament marks the start of what will be a hectic international calendar for the side. Jason Gillespie faces a steep challenge in attempting to take Pakistan to the WTC finals, given the challenges posed within and outside the team.
