Some big changes can be in place following the meeting between the IPL franchise owners and BCCI office-bearers. All the teams have agreed that inactive capped Indian players who haven’t played international cricket for five years or more should be allowed to lower their base price at an IPL auction.

Currently, a capped player who has played just one match for India could ask for a base price as high as Rs 1 crore, while the limit for a capped Indian player’s base price is Rs 2 crore. The suggestion for the rule change came from IPL CEO Hemang Amin, who said that by allowing capped players to lower their base price, they could have a chance of getting picked up in the auction easily.

These would apply to players like Karun Nair, who last played for India in 2017 and hasn’t featured in the IPL since 2021, and could find a home at one of the ten franchises. Even if they don’t get some game time, a player could improve their skillset while playing alongside the best T20 batters and practicing under the best coaches in the world.

Retired Indian players should be labeled uncapped: CSK’s proposal

Fearing that they won’t be able to retain MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings have suggested that retired players should be labeled as uncapped. The rule was in effect from 2008 to 2021 but was scrapped following the request of the franchises. However, the CSK now wants the rule to be brought back. If reinstated, a player who retired from international cricket for five or more years would be labeled as an uncapped player. However, all the other franchises are not in favour of getting his rule reinstated.
